The 57-year-old Lakewood resident has a passion for community service. She’s been sharing her talents through public service since 2005, when she was first elected to Lakewood City Council. After serving five years, she was elected to her current position.

Antonio got a proverbial baptism by fire during her first weeks in office after Gov. John Kasich aggressively pursued Senate Bill 5, the collective bargaining bill, which eventually landed on the ballot as state Issue 2 and was defeated.

During those tumultuous days, Antonio said she realized how important it is to reach across the aisle and talk to fellow legislators — regardless of their political persuasion — in order to find commonality.

A former planning council manager for Cuyahoga County and a consultant, Antonio said resolving the school funding dilemma is a priority. She wants to revisit the way funds are distributed and where lottery profits are assigned because she maintains fully financing and funding public education is vital. She participated in the discussion to approve the transformation plan for the Cleveland Municipal Schools, citing this as a key accomplishment of her first term in the House.

She wants to encourage local governments to be creative when looking at how to share services and operate more efficiently.

Her opponent, Republican John Zappala, 53, also of Lakewood, is making his third bid for public office. He sought a position on Cuyahoga County Council and Lakewood City Council. Zappala was chosen by the Republican party to replace Matthew Deibel, who withdrew from the race.

A self-employed general contractor, Zappala has a good understanding of business and finances, which he said would serve him well in the state legislature.

But District 13 has a capable, dedicated representative in Antonio and she deserves re-election to a second term.

WE WERE VICTORIOUS! Once again I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make our campaign not only positive but VICTORIOUS!

On May 4^th we won the Democratic primary for State Representative in HD 13 with a solid margin of 54% of the vote. This win put the campaign on solid ground to go into the general election in a race that we were positioned to face an independent opponent.

BREAKING NEWS………We learned on Friday, May 14^th , that the independent candidate withdrew from the race through a communication to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. This means that I do not have an opponent in the race for State Representative for House District 13 in the general Election in November. While I am pleased to be in this enviable position, as I remarked to a local reporter, the campaign continues because it was never about the opponent, it has always been about the people of House District 13. This campaign is about connection and service. I will continue to reach out and connect with the members of the district at events and neighborhood gatherings in the coming months, as we discuss concerns and strategies to strengthen our community and serve Ohio’s families. Making History-I will also carry the distinction of being the first openly gay legislator elected to the General Assembly at the conclusion of the November election. It is my hope that this notoriety will serve as a catalyst for dialogue as we strive to remove the barriers that now divide us as we work for equality for all Ohioans. I am very proud of Jean Kosmac my partner of 16 years and our daughters, Ariel and Stacey. I believe  everyone should be afforded the right to celebrate their family with love and dignity. We must never forget all of those who came before us who made this moment possible.

Moving Forward- One of the strengths of this campaign was our ability to bring together a diverse group of retirees, families, students and active community members who worked for a brighter future for Ohio.  Through this campaign we were able to unite around a common goal and were victorious, however, our work is not done. Your energy, spirit and support will continue to be the driving force behind this campaign as we work on specific legislation and the issues of Jobs, Education and Healthy Communities. We continue to be in this together.
